Glòries transformation

2013 Barcelona
Vora

The proposal for remodeling glòries is the result of a collective reflection on the city model nowadays. We think that glories centrality brings an opportunity to begin a process of urban regeneration in barcelona.

Barcelona is one of the cities with the highest number of vehicles and some of the highest pollution levels in Europe.
The Eixample district of Barcelona has 95% of its surface covered by buildings, panot sidewalks, and asphalt.
Only 5% of the area is made up of permeable soil that can breathe.

We are facing a clear imbalance, which leads us to consider that the large void soon to open in the Eixample — with the demolition of the ring at Plaça de les Glòries — should perhaps remain unbuilt and unsealed for a time.

Allowing the city to enjoy a large open space, temporarily stabilized with an extensive plantation of trees of various species.
Barcelona does not need more buildings, more cars, or more pavement.
The Eixample is asking for more public transport, more bicycles, more trees, and more green spaces.

We propose gradually reducing traffic until cutting Gran Via at its Glòries section, transforming it from a thoroughfare into a central part of the city — a new destination and the starting point for a new urban model.

Barcelona needs a large green lung that spreads across the perimeter streets and filters into the city.

We believe some of the existing buildings within the intervention area can be reused.
We strongly support the rehabilitation and improvement of these buildings’ energy efficiency.
A model of economic growth that is far more sustainable than demolition.
A model that should extend to the entire real estate stock of the city.

We envision “lightweight” actions — flexible and reversible interventions that can accommodate both present and future uses.

Future scenarios that our generation cannot yet foresee.
