ICAC Tabacalera

2026 Tarragona
Vora

The proposal is based on a careful integration of the new ICAC building within the existing Tabacalera complex, responding to its architectural context and strengthening the relationship with the adjacent archaeological site. The project enhances permeability across the site, establishing clear connections between the city, the complex, and the necropolis.

Mòdul 06 acts as a hinge between different levels and conditions: the necropolis below, the public realm at ground level, and the broader Tabacalera platform above. A continuous plinth mediates these height differences, creating an elevated pathway that both ensures accessibility and offers a new perspective over the archaeological remains. This element becomes a key interface between research, public access, and the historic substrate.

Access is clearly structured through permeable spaces between buildings. A main public entrance is positioned between the ICAC and the MNAT, directly addressing the necropolis, while a secondary access accommodates staff and logistics independently. This dual system allows for flexible use and clear separation of flows.

The ground floor is conceived as an open and public layer, directly connected to the city and the archaeological context, hosting exhibition and outreach functions. Above, the program becomes progressively more private, with research and workspaces located on the upper levels, and a semi-public knowledge space on the first floor.

The intervention remains intentionally minimal: the existing structure, envelope, and spatial logic are largely preserved. Transformations are focused on strategic openings, the introduction of an atrium for light and ventilation, and the reorganization of access and circulation. The basement is left largely untouched, allowing future archaeological excavations to take place as a living process within the building.
