Born Canopies
Two lightweight pallium structures at the ends of Plaça del Comerç provide a retractable shading and act as urban thresholds. They are reversible and adaptable, with foundations that can also function as public-use platforms.
The proposed solar protection system for Plaça del Comerç is based on an urban reading of the space. The intervention consists in two framed canopy structures with slender columns and retractable textile shades suspended by a lightweight cable system. The two canopies, located at the ends of the square, share dimensions and proportions derived from the surrounding architectures and the geometric order of the public space.
Their placement positions them as threshold spaces in the approach to the square and reinforces the strategy adopted in recent interventions, particularly the arrangement of benches in a parenthesis shape at both ends.
From a construction standpoint, the proposal considers two levels of reversibility, aiming to preserve the potential of the existing public space while adapting to different seasonal shade requirements. The structure is designed to be dismantled and removed if necessary.
The very shallow thickness over the underground parking beneath the square strongly conditions the support system of the canopies, especially their foundations. For this reason, two foundation alternatives are proposed:
The first, preferred option is an “invisible” system where the columns are anchored through embedded sleeves without any visible volumetric element at the base. This ensures continuity and fluidity of the public space while minimizing storage space if dismantled. The system is similar to that used in some terrace parasols.
The second option, intended to reduce construction risks, consists of prefabricated surface footings on which the columns are fixed using conventional anchor plates and threaded connections. These footings are designed not only as structural elements but also as support for new public uses. They have bench height and offer enough surface area to allow sitting, leaning, or temporarily extending nearby terraces. In this way, a structural requirement becomes an opportunity to activate and enrich the uses of the square.
