Parc dels Catalans Strategic Plan
Strategic plan for the long-term transformation of a park currently lacking activity, despite its central urban location. The plan aims to reconfigure the park into a new urban landscape that is connected, active, and pedestrian-oriented.
The Parc dels Catalans is situated over the former railway infrastructure and terminal station, and it still reflects this past as an urban barrier. Currently, the area is characterized by weak connectivity, a notable asymmetry regarding business activity along its urban fronts, and a heavy presence of road traffic, despite its central position.
The proposal suggests a gradual transformation into a pedestrian-oriented urban space, structured around four key vectors: mobility, permeability, spatial quality, and land use.
Traffic is reduced and diverted toward a perimeter ring, limiting private vehicle access through the area and prioritizing public transport. Spaces such as the square in front of the FGC station and the Portal de Sant Roc are reconfigured as pedestrian zones.
Connectivity is improved by removing barriers and strengthening longitudinal and transversal pedestrian paths. The Doré roundabout is transformed into a urban crossroad, and new crossings and permeabilities are introduced, especially along the eastern front.
The park is reconfigured to increase comfort and safety. Tree planting is expanded to provide continuous shade, permeable surfaces are increased, and existing topographies are adjusted to reduce hidden areas while maintaining spatial articulation.
New uses are introduced to activate the space. A versatile central clearing for changing activities and events, while specific play and sports areas are distributed throughout the rest of the park. The café is relocated to a more visible position, and ground floors along the eastern edge are activated.
Finally, the transformation is conceived as a progressive, phased process, combining temporary and permanent interventions to gradually adapt the space. This approach allows the park to respond to future changes in city mobility and the urban structure surrounding the city’s southern entrance.
